Becoming a member

Community of peoplePeople First (Self Advocacy) is a user-led organisation run by and for people with learning difficulties. Our members tell us what is important to them, and this guides the work that we do.

There are two types of membership:

Individual members:

Person centred 4This can be anyone with a learning difficulty living in the UK. They must be over the age of 16, or over the age of 18 to be on the Management Committee.

What you get as an individual member:

  • You will be able to vote at our Annual General Meeting, and be able to put yourself forward to be a member of the Management Committee. Voting at our Annual General Meeting means that you can vote for who should be on the Management Committee. It also means that you can vote on resolutions, these are ideas about the work and future plans for People First
  • You will get information about policy and campaigns; this can be by email or by post. This will be made up of important information and news, information about consultations that are happening and information about campaigning events and demonstrations
  • You will be able to send us information that will be added to People First consultation responses and campaigns.
  • You can get support to set up a new self-advocacy or speaking up group if there isn’t one in your area
  • You can write articles or send us information for our website and news updates

  • Your group will get a discount on our new Easy Read Picture Bank
  • We also give advice about a number of different things such as:
    • Fundraising
    • How to be more user-led
    • Campaigning
    • Making big decisions in an organisation

Any applications to become a member of People First (Self Advocacy) are agreed by the Management Committee at their next meeting. To become a member each person or group must also support People First’s values, these are important things that guide the way that we work.
